Two South Carolina school districts receive hybrid school buses
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Two school buses partially powered by
electricity were unveiled today as part of a nationwide pilot
project aimed at cutting exhaust emissions.
Rock Hill School District Three and Richland School District Two
were chosen to test the buses in South Carolina.
State Education Superintendent Jim Rex says the plug-in hybrid
diesel-electric buses will help offset increasing fuel costs and
reduce emissions by up to 90 percent.
Advanced Energy, a Raleigh, N.C.-based nonprofit corporation
leading the project, approved contracts to send buses to South
Carolina and other states.
The state operates 5,000 school buses.
