Get in touch with Russ! How did you get into radio?
In 1974 I met this girl that was working at the student radio station, WSBF. I really thought that she might be “the one”. So, I started volunteering at the station. The girl turned out to NOT be “ the one”… BUT I truly discovered my calling...RADIO….And the rest , as they say, is history.
How long have you been at this station?
I came to WFBC AM/FM on December 1, 1980. I was hired to do the afternoon show and to be the color commentary analyst for the Clemson Tiger football radio broadcasts. In June of 1981, I was promoted to do the morning show and with that I also became the host of the “ TIGER TAILGATE SHOW”. From then until June 1992, I was also the program director, music director, sales manager and station manager. I left to try to buy my own station in Seneca, S.C. but that didn’t work out. In March of 1994, I was asked to come back to WORD as a talk show host and program director.

What do you like most about the business?
The challenge of talk radio. Everyday is an adventure. I also enjoy working with so many of our wonderful advertisers and sharing their message with the upstate, so many of them have been with us for decades. But it is really fun working with clients who are new or who are letting us tell their story for the very first time.
What do you think listeners like most about you?
Consistent conservative commentary day after day, year after year, decade after decade. My motto is simply know what you believe and why you believe it, but as I tell our listeners everyday, my only purpose on the show is to make you think.

Get In Touch with Lisa! How did you get into radio?
In college I wanted to become a writer and decided the most fun way to write was for radio. Writing commercials, promos, etc. So, I decided to apply for my first job with high hopes of getting anything available and was actually hired as Copywriter to start the next week at WQOK...the most popular Top 40 Radio Station in the entire upstate. It was wonderful and I have been radio-active since that time in the early 70's.
How long have you been at this station?
I was hired at WFBC (now WORD) in 1991 and have loved every minute of my time here.
How long have you lived in Greenville, SC?
I was born and raised in Greenville! Went to Stone School, League Middle and graduated from Greenville High School. Left the area to go to College in Atlanta.
Where else have you worked?
I have worked ONLY in radio since college ... however, in High School I interned with Dr. Potts in the Lab at the old Greenville Memorial Greenville Hospital. See I thought I wanted to be a doctor...but NO...radio is a whole lot more fun!
What are some community events you are involved in?
I am, and have been for a number of years, involved in several charitable activities. Our church activities are the most important to our family.
What do you like most about the business?
There are so many facets of the radio business that I dearly love. At the top of the list..connecting with YOU, the listeners. It's my extended "family" and I have come to know some well and call many "my true friends." I love being able to work in the NEWS TALK radio format which allows me to discuss the issues of importance to our community on a daily basis.
What do you think listeners like most about you?
I truly listen to the callers and feel their concerns. I am compassionate and caring...sometimes to a fault. I hear back from so many that this is why you listen. Everyone wants to get heard! Radio is a wonderful way to be able to express your concerns to someone who understands. I'm like an old friend you can call up and chat...and I love it!
What do you do for fun?
Warren and I have been married since we were 19 and 20 years old..so just about FOREVER! We both love spending time with our 2 grown kids and now, we're grandparents for the very first time! Love spending time with our little Katie! Much of our time together we spend going out, visiting wonderful places in the area. I love reading, shopping, being outdoors and most of all...coming to talk with my listeners every day! Life is good!

Get In Touch with Lonzo!Lonzo's road to radio has been a very rocky and winding trek. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, his football career came to an end in college after total knee reconstruction. With gridiron dreams ended Lonzo took many jobs in retail, but after his fifth place of employment went out of business he decided to go to recording school. Graduating in the top 1 percent of his class he set off to find a job in the recording industry or at least a temporary radio gig.
His family had a chance to move to South Carolina and while his wife Lisa was looking for a job, he saw a radio station in the same building. Resume' in hand he walked into WPEK 98.1 and received an interview on the spot. He was hired that day and started out board opping Atlanta Braves baseball. A year later he had worked his way into producing the morning show as well as a sports show on Saturday. The Saturday sport show was called Sports Saturday with Stan Olenik and it was here where Lonzo got stung by the bug that is Sports Talk.
Lonzo worked at the Peak for 4 years, until the station was sold, and the format was changed. Three days later he landed at News Radio WORD 1330/950 AM, and now 106.3 FM, producing the Ralph Bristol show. Starting at the bottom of the barrel, he worked his way towards morning and he is now producing the Russ and Lisa show in the morning where he frequently contributes on air.
Lonzo is the Executive Producer for WORD, morning producer, and the co-host of ‘The Scoreboard with Lonzo and Matt’ and ‘The Byrnes Coaches Show’. He is a husband and a proud father of two beautiful children (Kameron and Ravynn) who participate in every sport and extracurricular activity known to man. He is the lead singer for the Christian Rock band, Crimson Promise, songwriter, and an aspiring author.
Like many who got into radio temporarily, Lonzo has found that after 10 years, this radio thing might have a future!
