A Chesnee mother of five was arrested on Tuesday, charged with five counts of child neglect, after deputies said the family was living in a condemned home filled with flies, trash and feces.
Spartanburg County deputies said they were driving by 30-year-old Amy Henderson's Jones Road home headed to another investigation when they saw a young boy outside without clothes on carrying a hammer.
The deputy stopped and knocked on the front door, which Henderson eventually answered, according to a sheriff's office report. Upon entering the home, deputies said there were thousands of flies inside and piles of rotting trash throughout the home.
Deputies said in one bathroom, the floors had caved in, making the tub unreachable, and in another bathroom, one bathtub was full of cat feces. They said there was also a hole in the wall where feces was dumped through.
Three children ages 4, 2 and four months were home with Henderson, covered in lice, bruises and scratches, according to investigators. They said the other two children, ages 10 and 9 were at school.
Henderson told deputies they had lived at the home for two years.
The children were placed in emergency protective custody. The report stated that building code officials were called in, where they condemned the home.
